First Child 2.0 Goes for A Ride

My husband and I snuck away on an errand/date one morning. We left our oldest child in charge. He had just gotten his learner’s permit and had done some of the driving with me in the passenger seat. Our youngest child had ridden in his car seat in the back on these occasions. We always tease our oldest that our youngest child (10 years apart) is a version 2.0 of him because they looked so much alike as babies and are of a similar temperament.

We aren’t the family that eats out every week, but on occasion we do go to McDonald’s. The one by us happens to have a large, fun playground.

While my husband and I were gone on that date, my youngest child asked his brother to take him to McDonald’s for some breakfast. His logic: ‘He knows how to drive.’ He couldn’t see anything wrong with him hopping in the car and taking him there.

Fast forward a few weeks later as school was ending, his oldest brother did indeed take him to McDonald’s. Legally. With mom in the seat beside him.

Sometimes in life our logic makes perfect sense. There doesn’t seem to be any problem with our plan. But there is a lot we don’t understand yet. And things don’t work out like we want. It takes a little waiting, but eventually anything good for us, God is eager and willing to send.

And for those unfulfilled pleas of our heart, I am convinced that somehow, someway, whether in this life or the next, it will be made right to us through the power of our older brother Jesus Christ.

So if you’re experiencing a day where your brother won’t take you to McDonald’s when he has the ability to do so, wait. And watch for the time when you least expect it. Your brother will indeed take you to McDonald’s. And you may get to play in the playground instead of go through the drive through.
